GPT-6 Goes Free: What You Get — and What You Don't

ChatGPT's newest model just opened to free users. But under the headline "GPT-6 for everyone" sits a different model for every plan. The short version: the free access is real, the machine you get isn't the same, and the actual new face — Intelligent UI — comes with its own fine print. Here's who gets what, and who doesn't. Ribbit.
The short version
The rollout — Paid tiers get GPT-6 Sol, Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna. Same name, different machine
The new face — "Intelligent UI": answers arrive as tables, maps and calculators instead of plain text
The blank — Free-tier usage limits are unpublished, and the rollout reaches accounts gradually
The GPT-6 rollout at a glance
OpenAI began putting GPT-6 into ChatGPT on October 7, 2026. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) went first; Free and the low-cost Go plan followed on October 8.
The audience is everyone — over 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users, by OpenAI's count. The change applies to the Chat tab only; the models behind Work and Codex are unchanged.
Riding along is Intelligent UI. The model decides the shape of each answer: side-by-side tables for comparisons, diagrams for concepts, a working calculator when numbers are involved — and plain text when plain text is best.
Answers start faster, too. On questions needing web search, GPT-6 Instant began replying 44% sooner on average than its predecessor, in OpenAI's internal tests. It composes answers in stages instead of waiting to finish.
Enterprise workspaces only get it when an admin turns it on, and older Windows and macOS desktop apps don't support the new interface.

The cost gap shows up in API pricing. On the official price page (checked Oct 15, 2026), Sol runs $2 in / $10 out per million tokens, Luna $0.10 / $0.50 — a 20x difference. The flagship Astra sits at $10 / $50. Subscription prices themselves didn't change.
OpenAI says GPT-6 hits the core of what users ask more often than its predecessor on hard problems. The speed figures, though — the 44% included — are all from OpenAI's own evaluations.
On independent scoreboards, Astra tops the GPT-6 family and Luna sits near the bottom. "Latest model for everyone" and "best model for everyone" are different sentences.
Trip planning: stops and routes laid out on a map.
Cooking: steps and timings arranged as a timeline.
Learning: a savings calculator you can poke at — change the inputs, watch the outcome move — and diagrams for concepts.
Everyday tools: a bill splitter built on the spot, or even a small game, without leaving the chat.
The screen doesn't wait for the answer to finish. A component library and compiler render pieces as the model writes, so a chart can appear first and the text fills in around it.
The free upgrade is the light model. Same name, different performance — and nothing in the plan names tells you that.
The priciest plan's flagship (Astra) is the one variant left out of the new interface. The users paying the most don't get the headline feature.
How much free use you actually get is unpublished. OpenAI hasn't posted a GPT-6 message limit for free accounts, and the rollout is gradual — "available to everyone" is not the same as "visible in your account today."
For developers, there's a blank too: the announcement says nothing about API access to Intelligent UI. Whether you can build this interface into your own product is, for now, unknown.
TechCrunch's demo produced a diagram of how an airplane wing makes lift, an illustrated bicycle-repair walkthrough, a multi-day hiking map, and a working savings calculator.
Reports also say the visuals can be dialed back in settings — though that detail comes from TechCrunch's reporting, not from OpenAI's announcement itself.
OpenAI also says safety was tightened: better resistance to jailbreaks spread across multiple messages, and a stronger tendency to admit when it can't answer properly.
In Korea, Chosun Biz framed the free rollout alongside Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 launch the same day — a user-grab race between the two labs.
Free GPT-6 is real. What you receive, though, is the light Luna — and the genuinely new face, Intelligent UI, arrives with unpublished limits and a gradual rollout. Before celebrating "the latest model is open," check what your plan actually gets. Ribbit.
