Opus 6 Is Coming, Bell Is Coming… So Why Is There No Official Word?
As of Oct 16, 2026 · Both official newsrooms checked directly · Views -
Since October 15, tech outlets have all started telling the same story: Anthropic is about to ship Claude Opus 6, and OpenAI will answer with a mystery project called 'Bell'. One detail does not fit — neither company's official newsroom has announced anything. Here is what is confirmed, and what is still just talk, kept apart. Ribbit.
The short version
Confirmed — No Opus 6 or Bell announcement exists in either newsroom (checked directly, Oct 16)
The talk — It started with "routing" reports on Oct 11 and got recycled across outlets by Oct 15
The takeaway — What you can use today is Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol. Decide on official announcements
What is officially confirmed
Anthropic's newsroom tops out at an October 15 post about independent evaluators, plus October 14 items. There is no new-model announcement. The current flagship is Claude Opus 5.5, launched September 22, 2026.
OpenAI's newsroom looks the same. Its October 15 posts are about education, and the last model news is GPT-6 opening to everyone on October 7. The newest model is GPT-6.1 Sol from September 29. No announcement, model card or document names a model called 'Bell'.
The top models you can actually use today, at official prices: Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 in / $20 out, GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 / $10, GPT-6 Astra at $10 / $50 — all per million tokens, from the official pricing pages.

The talk, in order
Oct 10 — Claims about a 'Fable 6' and a larger model in training start circulating from a single post on X. Analyses published alongside note the claim carries no attached evidence.
Oct 11 — Some users report that Opus 5.5 "seems to route" to a new model. Three different names float around for it: Fable 5.5, Opus 5.6, Opus 6. The names disagreeing with each other is itself the tell — nobody outside Anthropic knows what it is.
Oct 14 — Geeky Gadgets reports Anthropic "may launch Opus 6 next week" against Bell, bundling the rumor with speculation about an Anthropic IPO.
Oct 15 — WIRED, ExtremeTech, the Economic Times and MLex, among others, pick the story up. Tech Insider's summary is the honest one: every outlet is working from the same thin set of signals and filling the gaps, so it looks like "multiple outlets confirm" while no outlet has confirmed anything official.
As for 'Bell', even a mix-up with OpenAI's unrelated "Operation No Bell" — an initiative against malicious use — has been floated. Also unconfirmed.
No announcement. Current flagship is Opus 5.5 (Sep 22)
A "next week" launch — with the name itself split between 5.6 and Fable 5.5
OpenAI 'Bell'
No announcement or document. Newest model is GPT-6.1 Sol (Sep 29)
A next-gen codename — every spec claim unconfirmed
Anthropic IPO
Nothing officially confirmed
Reported in the same breath as the Opus 6 rumor
Today's evidence
Two newsrooms, both silent
Posts on X and recycled coverage
Everything in the right-hand column is coverage and posts in circulation. None of it has been confirmed by either company.
Why this rumor, why now
Release cycles have compressed. Opus 5 to 5.5 took 60 days, and Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 landed within the last few weeks. "The next one is imminent" simply sounds plausible right now.
Reports of Anthropic preparing an IPO are the fuel. A big launch tied to a listing story makes valuable articles, and the expectation manufactures more articles. The IPO timing itself is, again, not officially confirmed.
Give the other side a name — 'Bell' — and a rivalry narrative is complete. A rival with no substance makes stories, but leaves nothing to verify.
What to do in practice
Choose among what ships today. Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra — and, since yesterday, the open-weight Muse Spark Open. The shelf is not empty.
There is no evidence base for delaying an adoption decision, or reshaping an architecture, around a rumor. Keep the integration layer swappable, and swap on the day a real announcement lands.
The places to check are fixed: Anthropic's newsroom and OpenAI's newsroom. Until a post appears in one of them, all of this stays in the "talk" column.
The cold water
None of this proves the rumors false, either. Weak signals like routing reports have, at times, preceded real tests in this industry. A signal is just not an announcement.
And when a handful of posts gets repackaged as press coverage, an illusion of "confirmed by many" appears. Count the kind of source, not the number of sources.
Puzz, in one line
As of today, Opus 6 and Bell are expectations, not products. Rumors show the industry's temperature; only official announcements ground a product decision. When the real documents land, this frog will split them open here. Ribbit.
